Can-Am
DVD3150 Can-Am Thunder
the mighty machines of the series

The mighty machines of the Can-Am Championship must surely be leading candidates for the title of 'most awesome racing cars ever built'...
Some forty years ago they put out over 1000 horsepower in their most-developed form and hit speeds of up to 220mph (354Km/h) despite aerodynamics that were experimental at best and highly dangerous at worst! They made the Grand Prix F1 cars of the day look tame by comparison.
And even today, the 'Can-Am thunder' still rumbles as huge crowds flock to historic race meetings wherever these incredible cars appear.
Porsche, McLaren, Lola and Shadow were the Championship-winning cars, with Chaparral, Bryant Ti22, March, BRM and Ferrari as the challengers. We focus in depth upon all of these as they rumble and roar around tracks like Laguna Seca with its legendary downhill 'corkscrew' turn. We even recall the days of the 'Interserie' - Europe's Can-Am equivalent - by filming at the Nürburgring round of the current Orwell Supersports Cup series for historic Can-Am cars.
In making this up-close examination of the mighty machines of the Can-Am, we use a great combination of modern action footage, rare archive film and almost 100 superb pictures from the best photographers of the day.
We hear reminiscences from the three Can-Am champions still with us - John Surtees, George Follmer and Jackie Oliver - as well as from Jim Hall - the designer of the incredible Chaparral 'fan car' - and its driver, Vic Elford.
In addition, Hurley Haywood tells us what it was like to wrestle with the mighty turbocharged Porsche 917/10 in the heat of Can-Am competition. He is one of the world's best-ever sports car drivers with three wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, five in the Daytona 24 Hours and two in the Sebring 12 Hours to his credit!
Finally, Peter Bryant, creator of the successful Bryant Ti22 and Shadow Mk2 cars, recalls what it was like trying to design a 220mph (354Km/h) racer without the aid of computers or wind tunnels!
Up until now the definitive documentary on the cars of the Can-Am has never been made. This is it!
Bonus features:
Peter Bryant, Can-Am Challenger - He was a self-taught designer responsible for two of the most successful Can-Am challengers. Here's the inside story by Peter Bryant.
Pete Lyons Looks Back - Acknowledged as the world's leading expert on the Can-Am series, Pete Lyons recalls some personal memories from the day.

DVD40917 The GULF / Wyer
GT40's & 917's

In Action

‘Never Start Something You Can’t Stop’ concentrates on the efforts of the John Wyer team of Gulf Ford GT40s to win the 1968 Le Mans 24 hour race. It begins with a fast lap around the 8.4-mile circuit viewed from a GT40. In the race Rodriguez and Bianchi provided a first Le Mans victory for themselves and Gulf Oil and a second victory for John Wyer who had also won in 1959 with his Aston Martin team. This was the third successive win for Ford.
‘A Year To Remember’ is a marvellous record of John Wyer’s highly successful 1970 season when his fabulous Gulf Porsche 917s swept to victory in seven out of ten Championship races. During the film John Wyer, Pedro Rodriguez and Seppi Siffert appear from time to time providing a poignant reminder of the personalities who made such a great contribution to motor racing.

And Target 200

This atmospheric film traces the fascinating story of the awesome Ford GT40 and its domination of the world's greatest endurance race.
In 1966 the American car giant was determined to beat the best Europe had to offer at the Le Mans 24 Hour race.
Three teams equipped with eight Mark II GT40s travelled to France with victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe the only goal.
Ford boasted an incredible driver line-up featuring some of the greatest names in motorsport - including Bruce McLaren, Graham Hill, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, Chris Amon, Ken Miles and more.
Amazingly, the seven-litre V8 GT40 would not only take victory, but would dominate the race to fill the top three positions, leaving Porsche and Ferrari in the shade.
This wonderful film captures the drama and magic of this classic race, with comments from the drivers and trackside commentary creating a unique and atmospheric record of Ford's important victory.
This DVD also features Target 200, an extraordinary film from the Ford archives. It traces the development of the iconic GT40 from conception to racetrack, with rare footage of Roy Lunn and John Wyer discussing plans for the car and the building of the first prototypes.
Target 200 also features exceptional film of the GT40 - in the hands of Bruce McLaren - in race action at famous circuits like the Nurburgring and undergoing high-speed testing at Goodwood.

Despite impressive challenges from Lancia Martini and the privately-entered Porsches of Joest, JDavid and Kremer, the down-to-the-wire championship battle would be between works Porsche drivers.

This action-packed review features dramatic highlights and interviews with the stars bringing you the full story of the season. Exceptional action footage, including in-car sequences courtesy of the Rothmans Porsches, from all seven rounds charts the incredible year-long battle for the driver’s title. Experience the speed, drama, controversy and nail-biting finale from an incredible year.

The 1983 season boasted an impressive driver line-up, including sportscar greats Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Stefan Bellof, Jochen Mass, Jan Lammers and Bob Wollek, Grand Prix stars past, present and future like Michele Alboreto, Riccardo Patrese, Thierry Boutsen and Stefan Johansson, plus appearances from legends like Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg and Mario Andretti.

Joest showed early promise with victory in the opening round at Monza, but the works Porsche team soon established its dominance, taking victory at every other round. The season-long duel between Ickx and Bell came to a dramatic and tension-packed finale at the last round of the season, as rain, spins and crashes kept the outcome in doubt right down to the chequered flag. This DVD has all the highlights, including the dramatic wet weather race at Silverstone, the closest Le Mans race for a decade, the car-wrecking Fuji round and much more.

This comprehensive review is an essential record of an important year for sportscar racing, as well as an action-packed journey through an awesome season of racing.

Relive the drama, action and controversy of the 1984 World Sportscar Championship in this exceptional review. Incredible highlights chart the battles between the mighty Rothmans Porsches, the Martini-backed Lancias and the huge field of privately entered machines from determined challengers like Brun, Joest, Kremer and more.

The 1984 World Championship boasted an impressive line-up of drivers. There were legends of sportscar racing, including Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Stefan Bellof, Jochen Mass and Bob Wollek, plus Grand Prix stars past present and future - such as John Watson, Riccardo Patrese and Thierry Boutsen.

DVD3991 World Spotscar Championship Review 1985

The 1985 World Sportscar Championship was a season of tragedy, triumph and controversy. This exceptional review features incredible highlights charting a historic year for motorsport, as pitlane fiascos and the tragic loss of two racing stars prompted widespread changes for the sport.

This review is packed with action and incident from all 10 rounds of the championship chase, with interviews, in-car footage and informed commentary bringing you the full story of an important season. From the opening race at Mugello to the closing round in Malaysia - visiting Le Mans, Monza, Spa and Silverstone along the way - this is a comprehensive look back at 1985.

The arrival of a new Porsche, the 962C, raised fresh hopes privateer teams like Joest, Kremer and Brun could challenge the works Rothmans Porsche outfit, while improved reliability could make the powerful Lancia a genuine contender. With an exceptional driver line-up, featuring Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Stefan Bellof, Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck, Riccardo Patrese and many more, the scene was set for a fascinating sportscar season.

Although the works Porsche machines dominated again, the racing captured on this review makes for compelling viewing. Sadly, the 1985 was overshadowed by the horrific accidents which claimed the lives of Manfred Winkelhock and reigning champion Stefan Bellof.

The tragic loss of these two young racers, coupled with the hectic scenes as the Hockenheim round is hit by three pit fires, led to major changes for the series, making 1985 an historically important year.

The once-dominant Rothmans Porsche team would see its turbo-charged 962Cs humiliated by the Tom Walkinshaw-prepared V12 XJR-8 Jags, with the British marque securing victory in all but two of the season's races. Jaguar may have left the others behind, but that didn't mean the racing wasn't dramatic! DVD3995 World Spotscar Championship Review 1989

Sauber-Mercedes was the team to beat in the 1989 World Sportscar Championship, the mighty Silver Arrows overshadowing rivals Jaguar, Porsche, Nissan and Toyota throughout the battle for the prototype title. This action-packed review features dramatic highlights and interviews with the stars bringing you the full story of the season.

Exceptional action footage, including some in-car sequences, from all eight rounds charts the incredible performance of the unstoppable Sauber-Mercedes C9 from the opening race in Japan to the title-deciding final round in Mexico. Experience the speed, drama, controversy and nail-biting finale from one of the most memorable seasons of racing.

The Sauber-Mercedes assault was led by Jean-Louis Schlesser, Jochen Mass, Mauro Baldi and Kenny Acheson, while driving greats including Jan Lammers, Bob Wollek, Julian Bailey, Mark Blundell were also out for victory during the 1989 season.

The arrival of Jaguar's new turbo-charged XJR-11, a strong field of privately-entered Porsches and Japanese competition from Toyota and Nissan posed occasional challenges to Sauber-Mercedes' dominance, but the silver cars were almost in a class of their own. While the destination of the team title was a foregone conclusion from the opening round, the battle for the driver's crown remained an intense fight between Schlesser and Baldi right down to the very last race - where a massive collision decided the outcome. All eyes were on Sauber-Mercedes, but this review also highlights the Joest team's heroics, the awesome Spice performance at Donington and the flashes of brilliance from Jaguar's drivers.
